For those of you living and working in Central London, training for the Great Gorilla Run can be a massive challenge in itself.
Pounding out the kilometers on the gym treadmill grinds you down after a while.
Great Gorillas need to be outside, smelling the sweet perfumes of London and feeling the rush of urban energy you get from witnessing the great spectacle of the city in all it’s visual glory as you sprint across one of the Thames bridges.
So here’s a training route that takes in five of the Central London bridges and has the added benefit of being part of the route for the Great Gorilla Run. Do this training run and you’ll feel very much at home come run day in September…
1) Start at the Tower of London and head across Tower Bridge
2) Run along the Thames Path Southside heading West past the GLA building and HMS Belfast
3) Head across London Bridge heading north
4) Run along Upper Thames Street and turn left across Southwark Bridge
5) Run West along the Thames Path Southside, past Shakespeare’s Globe and the Tate Modern
6) Head north across Blackfriars Bridge
7) Turn left back onto the Embankment and run past the London Eye across the river
8) Finally, Hungerford Bridge - cross this pedestrian bridge with the train track heading out of Charing Cross Station right next to you and the concrete glory of the Southbank Centre straight ahead.
9) The way home – you can run all the way along the river on the Southside to Tower Bridge, or if you still got the legs you do a few of the bridges in reverse.
Post-run pig out recommendation - take your pick from all the wonderful eateries situated around Borough Market.
It’s a sight-seeing extravaganza followed by a foodie feast – go for it Great Gorillas!
